Dessert: Grilled Banana Split with Chocolate Ice Cream and Smoked Almonds

Recipe by Kristin Donnelly Smoked almonds highlight the bananas' grilled flavors in this 5-ingredient dessert. While you can grill ripe bananas that have some black spots, they're easier to move around if they are completely yellow and slightly firm.

Ingredients

1/4 cup turbinado sugar (Sugar in the Raw)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
4 ripe but firm large bananas
Vegetable oil, for grilling
1 pint chocolate ice cream
1 ounce smoked almonds, roughly chopped (1/4 cup)

Instructions

Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. In a small bowl, mix the sugar with the salt.
Slice off the ends of each banana and halve lengthwise, leaving the peel intact. Sprinkle the cut sides of the bananas with the sugar mixture and allow to absorb, 1 minute. Oil the grill grates, then grill the bananas cut side down over high heat until nicely browned, 2 to 3 minutes.
Transfer 2 banana halves to each of 4 plates or bowls, peeling if desired. Set a scoop of ice cream in the center, sprinkle with the smoked almonds and serve.
